Thanksgiving is a time that we set aside once a year to reflect and remember all the things we have in our lives for which to be thankful. Getting together with our families and friends gives us the opportunity to be grateful for the ones that are in our lives, reconcile our differences, and even reconnect with the ones we have drawn apart from. It is an opportunity to re calibrate our hearts and minds back to a place of gratefulness which is more important now than it ever has been. As a society we’ve walked away from our ability to be thankful for what we have. We instead let anger, pride and greed set in and focus on what we don't have. We have become a society where we are so focused in on what others have and are doing that we often times look over the blessings that we have because they don’t look like others.
Everyone's blessings don't look the same, we cant look at what others have and feel remorse for our own blessings. God blesses each and every one of us according to our individual needs. We all may not have the most expensive car or nicest house but if we have a car that runs and 4 walls and a roof we are already doing better than most of the rest of the world. Sadly the as the minutes tick by we are losing our constant reminders from the generations that came before and lived their lives with a grateful hearts towards everything they had. Our parents and grandparents lived with a gracious heart even though they may not have had a lot. Reflection gives us a time to re-calibrate and get back on the right course, lets take this opportunity we have during Thanksgiving to re-calibrate ourselves our society back to the ways of the past. a simpler time where everyone was grateful for anything they had and didn't worry about what they didn't have.
Lets get back to the heart of Thanksgiving
Below is a list of things that we can do this Thanksgiving holiday to re-calibrate
1) Look for things in your life to be grateful and thankful for
-The more we look for things to be thankful the better chance we have of finding something.
2) Lets not lose our ability to discern want and need
3) Speak nice thoughts and compliment people instead of looking for ways to cut them down
4) Try to make a positive difference in someones life who may be less fortunate than you are even if it means going out of your way.
5) Come up with a list of things for which you are grateful
Try to think of things beyond inanimate objects and possessions
6) Put aside politics and partisan bickering.
Family is more important than political sides and social issues
7) Live every day like its Thanksgiving
Not in regards to feasting but in regards to thankfulness and reconciliation. we can actually choose to live every day of our lives with a thankful heart
8) Think "we" over "me"
We can get so focused on ourselves that we forget that we live on this world with others
We will never be able to see the needs of others as long as we are looking at ourselves
9) Remember why we have what we have
God blesses those who are faithful to Him so that they can be a blessing to others
10) Remember/thank those who are serving our country (Military, Police, Fire, EMS) and be thankful for the daily sacrifice that they and the rest of their families make.
“Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth. Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing. Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.”
Psalms 100:1-5 NASB
Happy Thanksgiving
